How many ounces is a normal enema solution?
4.5 ounces is recommended for persons over 12 years old. Contact your doctor for children under 12 years old or having other medical conditions. Certain enema procedures may call for larger or smaller enema solution volumes.
How long should you hold the enema solution in your rectum before you evacuate?
Enema solutions should be held until the urge to evacuate is strong. If no urge is felt after 5 minutes of using, try to empty your bowel. Call a doctor promptly after using a saline enema and no liquid comes out of your rectum after 30 minutes, because dehydration could occur.
